National Cherry Blossom Festival 2017 Event Schedule

Gear up for the month-long of festivities the National Cherry Blossom Festival has to offer at Washington DC! Here’s the schedule, beginning with the inaugaral ceremony on 25 March 2017:

25 March:  National Cherry Blossom Festival opening ceremony

A formal ceremony filled with traditional and contemporary stage performances by The 6821 Quintet, Shigeyama Kyogen, etc!

Where: Warner Theatre, 513 13th Street NW

Time: 5 pm – 6:30 pm. Tickets required.

26 March: El Squad Performance

A revolutionary street dance team to perform in a electroluminescent ambience.

Where: Kreegar Theatre at Arena Stage, 1101 6th Street SW

Time: 6:30 pm – 8 pm. Free entry.

 

31 March: Southwest Chamber Players Concert

A classical music rendition by featured musicians such as Russian cellist Julian Goudimova and other violin, flute, clarinet, bassoon and piano players.

Where: St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, 555 Water Street SW

Time: 7 pm. Free entry.

 

1 April: Blossom Kite Festival (signature event!)

Where: Washington Monument Grounds, Constitution Avenue and 17th Street NW

Time: 10 am – 4:30 pm. Free entry.

19th Annual National Cherry Blossom Freedom Walk

A short non-competitive celebrating Japanese and American relations and patriotic spirit.

Where: National Japanese American Memorial Foundation, Louisiana Avenue, New Jersey Avenue and D Street NW

Time: 9 am – 12 pm. Free entry.

 

National Cherry Blossom Day at Fairfax County at Tysons Corner Center

An event comprising of Japanese craft demonstrations and free gifts.

Where: Tysons Corner Center, 1961 Chain Bridge Road, McLean, VA

Time: 1 pm – 3 pm. Free entry.

 

Japanese Plum Wine Tasting

The plum blossom is another famous symbol of Japanese culture and is fervently used in cooking and brewing. Learn about their health benefits and how they are different from cherry blossoms.

Where: Green Spring Gardens, 4603 Green Spring Road, Alexandria, VA

Time: 4:30 pm – 6 pm. Tickets required.

 

April 2: Official Japanese Stone Lantern Lighting Ceremony

Where: Tidal Basin, Independence Avenue and 17th Street SW

Time: 3 pm – 4:30 pm. Free entry.

Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run and 5K Run-Walk

Where:  Washington Monument Grounds, 15th Street and Constitutional Avenue NW

Time: 7:30 am – 11 am. Registration required.

Taste of Japan at Cherry Blossom Time

Japanese green tea sampling, hand-made cherry tree fans and exhibits of interesting theme objects.

Where: Sully Historic Site, 3650 Historic Sully Way, Chantilly, VA

Time: 11 am – 12:30 pm and 1 pm to 2:30 pm. Free entry.

 

April 6: Tamagawa University Taiko Drumming and Dance Troupe

Where: John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Millennium Stage, 2700 F Street NW

Time: 6 pm – 7 pm. Free entry.

April 7: National Japan Bowl

An academic competition which tests students’ knowledge of Japanese language and customs at the National Cherry Blossom Festival.

Where: National 4-H Youth Conference Center, 7100 Connecticut Avenue, Chevy Chase, MD

Time: 2 pm – 5 pm. Free entry.

 

Cherry Blossom Grand Ball by the National Conference of State Societies (NCSS)

A premier black-tie event which selects the Cherry Blossom princesses and the US Cherry Blossom Queen. A night filled with sushi, cocktails and dancing.

Where: Marriott Gateway, Crystal City, 1700 Jefferson David Highway, Arlington, VA

Time: 6:30 pm – 12 am. Tickets required.

April 9: National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade (by Events DC)

Where: Constitution Avenue, between 7th and 17th Street NW

Time: 10 am – 12pm. Tickets required for grandstand seating. Free along parade route.

Sakura Matsuri Japanese Street Festival

Where: M Street and New Jersey Avenue SE

Time: 10:30 am – 6 pm. Tickets required.

Ikebana Flower Arranging Workshop

A Japanese art of flower arrangement called Ikebana, taught by instructors. Flower arranging workshops included.

Where: Green Spring Gardens, 4603 Green Spring Road, Alexandria, VA

Time: 10 am – 11:30 am. Tickets required.

 

April 9: Anacostia River Festival 

Exploring Anacostia river with fishing workshops, canoeing, kayaking, biking and live music.

Where: Anacostia Park, Anacostia Drive and Good Hope Road, SE

Time: 1 pm – 5 pm. Free entry.

April 11: Bonsai: Stories, Inspiration, Art – Another Special Gift of Trees from Japan

A session about these miniature trees, presided over by noted botanists.

Where: Library of Congress, 101 Independence Avenue SE

Time: 12 pm – 1 pm. Free entry.

 

April 14: Cherry Blast (by Events DC)

A celebration with a vibrant night market, live music, art showcase, a sports lounge and fashion shows.

Where: Dock 5 at Union Market, 1309 5th Street NE

Time: 7 pm – 12 am. Tickets required.

 

April 15: Southwest Waterfront Fireworks Festival (by Harris Teeter)

Where: 650 Water Street, SW to the Titanic Memorial

Time: 2 pm – 9:30 pm. Free entry.
