Top Ten Things To Do In Your 20s!

The 20s are the second teenage of your life. A time to expand your skills and views through more interaction and larger experiences. What better way to grow as a human being than to jump onboard a plane and tickle your travel fancies?

Why travel you ask me? Because there’s so much the world has to offer you! You can’t possibly experience it all in one place!

Here are the most daunting but worthy things to do in your 20s:

Top ten things to do in your 20s when travelling the globe

  1. Travel solo

Perhaps the most daunting part of travelling is going solo. A new place. New people. New experiences. Often travelling abroad on your own scares the shit out of people. But this can be the perfect eye-opener to reassure yourself of your impeccable organizational and networking skills.

And if not for the new experience, you can enjoy the silence and drool-worthy views of great places alone, almost selfishly.

There is beauty in everything, even in silence and darkness.” – Hellen Keller

2. Star gaze

There’ll come a time when you feel so completely tiny and insignificant. Like the cosmos is a mystery beyond logic and understanding. When the ocean of stars above press down on your head, you’ll truly understand this thought.

I know nothing with any certainty. But the sight of the stars makes me dream.” – Vincent van Gogh

3. Take train trips

People often disregard train trips as they are limiting in terms of movement and have strict time schedules.

But some of the best views of North America, Europe and Australia come from board the superfast expresses that trail across the continents.

Don’t live the same year 75 times and call it a life.” – Robin Sharma

4. Try exotic foods

If you’re fond of home-made bread and wine, go someplace famous for spicy or tacky meals. Tickle and trick your tastebuds into eating things it’s never tasted, such as snake wine or the Hákarl (decomposed shark meat found in Iceland)! Stretch yourself to accommodate a wider and more bewildering platter of items you can’t ever dream of!

Exploring the newness of food should be a definite add on to your list of things to do in your 20s!

If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.” – J.R.R. Tolkien

5. Camp out

Though we’ve done this in schools and summer camps, nothing beats the seclusion of owning a tent in the base of a mountain (or even up that!) or on riverbanks or deserts on your own, experiencing the terror and excitement of nature first hand.

There’s just something nurturing about being in one with nature, so much that the soft wet grass becomes your real home for a few days at a time.

Many of us shy away from camping out, worrying about soil and grime. So, if you’re fussy about getting your hands dirty, you can even try staying up tree houses. But don’t strike off camping from your list of things to do in your 20s.

6. Document your travels

Learn the camera works. Vlog your travels. Tweet about your whereabouts on social media. Leave imprints.

This habit will not just be reminders of the tremendous fun you’ve had. It’ll also help new travellers, correspondents and even companies with job offers to reach out to you.

7. Travel to places with new language and a new diaspora

Not just will you learn basic language (and maybe even non-verbal) skills. You’ll also pick up some new traditions, habits and ideas for your home turf.

Go with an open mind, ask yourself, “why is this so?”

Going to a geographically diverse location than yours will help you learn new sports (skiing and snow tubing – if you’re travelling to colder climates) and survival skills (like maybe a bit of cooking!).

8. Travel on a daily budget

Now this is challenging! Fix a daily budget travel and stick to it all-inclusive. This kind of travel will get you answering questions like, “did I save enough for this trip?” “am I spending right?” “what experiences give me the best value?”

9. Go air or go water!

Shed your fears at sky-diving and bungee jumping locations across the world. Or dive deep under the sealine, exploring underwater caves, blue holes and marine creatures. Cruise and kayak down some of the most dangerous rivers in the world such as the Nile or the Amazon.

If lucky, you can catch one of those man-eating piranhas and boast of it all your life in one of these trips!

10. Volunteer

Giving back to a new place touches lives of people you may never ever see again. This type of open generosity gives a mutual feeling of goodwill and fosters relations.

If you’re travelling for a few months at a time, some responsible volunteering in the country of your choice would be a life-changing 20s experience.
